Hamilton cruising to Spanish victory, Mercedes driven to make history

Defending world champion Lewis Hamilton back in the lead of F1’s title race, the Brit outbarking the pole sitter Valtteri Bottas into Turn One and then leading every lap of the race, as spotless Mercedes leave rivals behind again; the Silver Arrows record-extending fifth successive one-two at the start of the season after.

Hamilton settled the fastest lap bonus point for the first time, heading Bottas by eight points in the standings.

“I have to put it down to this incredible team,” said Hamilton. “This is history in the making to have five 1-2’s. I am very proud of that!

“It’s definitely been a bit of a hard first four races. Naturally we have a great car, but we don’t always get along. I’m grateful in the race that we managed to settle our differences.”

“It’s honestly very annoying today, I lost it at the start. Bottas told Sky F1.

“I can look in the mirror and say it was not my fault. I had some issue with the clutch, some vibration at the start which I never had before, that’s why the getaway was slow. I’m keen to find out what happened.”

Ferrari duo Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc beaten to third place by the remarkable Max Verstappen for Red Bull.

Verstappen said: “It was a hectic first corner – I just backed out of it and it gave me a good position. From there, the Mercedes were just too quick today.”

The Red Bull second man Pierre Gasly challenged Leclerc at the restart but finished sixth, with Kevin Magnussen seventh for Haas after overtaking team-mate Romain Grosjean.

Grosjean was also overtaken by McLaren’s Carlos Sainz and Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and finished 10th.
