How can Lewis Hamilton win the fifth F1 title at the US Grand Prix

Mercedes speedy Lewis Hamilton took a big step near to sealing his fifth F1 world title after securing his Mercedes on pole position at the U.S. Grand Prix on Saturday with his nearest championship contender Sebastian Vettel starting fifth.

Hamilton goes into the weekend 67 points clear of Vettel and would need to leave America with a 75-point gap to make his lead unquestionable. The three grands prix that remain after offer 75 points in the form of three victories.

The Briton, who will be only the third driver to win at least five titles if he scores eight points more than Vettel on Sunday.

How Lewis Hamilton can seal fifth F1 title at US GP

• If Hamilton wins and Vettel is third or lower
• If Hamilton finishes second and Vettel is fifth or lower
• If Hamilton finishes third and Vettel is seventh or lower
• If Hamilton finishes fourth and Vettel is eighth or lower
• If Hamilton finishes fifth and Vettel is ninth or lower
• If Hamilton finishes sixth and Vettel is 11th or lower

If Hamilton finishes seventh or lower the title race goes on to the Mexican GP on October 28
