The fastest lap in the history of #F1! Kimi Raikkonen set pole position in Monza with an average speed of 263.587 km/h 😲 #ItalianGP

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen made the fastest lap in the history of Formula 1 and its set 1-2 places for Ferrari on the grid for the home track Italian Grand Prix for the first time since 2000.

Kimi was also set a new track record at Monza, with the Finn clocking 1:19.119 to beat Juan Pablo Montoya’s 14-year mark.

Unexpectedly, it was Kimi Raikkonen who edged his teammate and title hopeful Sebastian Vettel in qualifying on Saturday to clinch only his second pole position in 10 years. Reigning championship leader Lewis Hamilton was third fastest.

Vettel thought he had secured pole as he outpaced Hamilton on the final lap and appeared to celebrate before being told on team radio that he had been beaten by Raikkonen.

“We speak later,” was Vettel’s response.

Raikkonen was front of the grid in Monaco last year.

Ferrari team boss Arrivabene: “We are not here to remove the smile somebody here, we are here to give the smile to the Tifosi. Monza is special and special for Formula 1.”
