Alonso criticises Hulkenberg after Belgian GP lap one crash

Published

on

Very first lap of the Belgian Grand Prix, Renault speedy Nico Hulkenberg misjudged his braking point and resulted a huge crash with McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and the Spaniard “flew over” the Sauber’s Charles Leclerc. All three drivers are retired from the race without any injury.

Today crash was very similar to the 2012 accident at Spa that resulted in a one-race ban for Romain Grosjean – and a DNF for Alonso.

“Yet again a very big-time missed braking point,” Alonso told the BBC.

“Last time Romain had a race ban. This time we’ll see. It’s hard to understand how you can miss a braking point that much. You arrive at a speed where it’s impossible to negotiate the corner.”

Leclerc’s halo was left with black smears where Alonso’s wheels hit the protection device. Hulkenberg admitted his error, braking too late, had caused the crash.

“The positive side is that we all three are okay, including Charles,” he said. “I flew over his car and the halo was a very good thing to have today. I think for him it helped, looking at the replay. I was definitely happier that I had the halo. We don’t need to prove that it’s a good thing to have.”
