Haas F1 rejects Alonso rumour

Haas has rejected a sensational rumour suggesting Fernando Alonso might move to the American team for 2019.

The news was first reported by Diario Gol, saying that Haas had been in touch with the McLaren-driving Spaniard as a potential replacement for Romain Grosjean — who may move to Ferrari.

“Alonso to Haas? That’s the first I’ve heard of that,” Haas team boss Gunther Steiner told BT newspaper in China.

“I think we can definitely reject that,” he added.

The Spaniard extended his McLaren deal in 2017 but his deal is believed to contain an opt-out section for the next season.

Despite the potential to quit at the end of the season, Alonso earlier described his new contract as a long-term agreement.

“We don’t talk about contract clauses but it’s more of a long-term partnership,” Alonso told Sky Sports after putting pen to paper.

“I would be extremely happy to finish my career in McLaren.

“I don’t think it’s going to be one year.”

After three difficult seasons at McLaren, Alonso is enjoying a positive start to the 2018 campaign.
