Bottas stuns with maiden win in Russia

Valtteri Bottas claims maiden Formula 1 win following fighting off pole sitter Sebastian Vettel for victory in Sochi for Russian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton in a lonely fourth behind Kimi Raikkonen; Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo retires with brake failure; Safety Car was deployed after Jolyon Palmer and Romain Grosjean crash at the first lap of the race. Another bad results for McLaren-Honda, Fernando Alonso out of the race even before it has started.

The Safety Car was interrupted on the first lap following Jolyon Palmer and Romain Grosjean collided in the turn one. Just following the restart Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo became the fourth retirement driver of the race after his rear brakes caught fire.

Great lap one launch for Bottas

Following the SC withdrawal, Bottas was able to steal the lead from Vettel. On the re-start, Bottas was away quickly to stay in charge ahead Vettel and his Ferrari team mate Raikkonen. Three-time champion Hamilton was down in fourth in the second Mercedes.

Pitstops for both Mercedes drivers proved crucial for Ferrari as Vettel briefly regained lead by lap 30. He ultimately dropped to second again once he entered the pits, allowing Bottas to grab first place…
