2017 F1: Hamilton edges Vettel in pre-season testing

Lewis Hamilton setting the fastest lap-time in the opening day of 2017 Formula One’s pre-season testing.

Hamilton’s best time of 1:21.765 seconds at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona was 0.113 seconds faster than nearest rival Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who was second fastest.

Felipe Massa with the Brazilian third quickest ahead of Haas’ Kevin Magnussen. The Dane crashed at turn ten in the morning session., which resulted in a broken front wing. That, though, was his only mistake for the day.

Daniel Ricciardo was fifth fastest despite his RB13 running into trouble. The Australian only managing four laps before lunch sensor issue interrupt the morning session running and a battery problem in the afternoon’s session gives a poor day for Red Bull.

The Mercedes’ fresh speedy Valtteri Bottas finished the day 1.4s slower than Hamilton. Sergio Perez was seventh ahead of Carlos Sainz, Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso, who covered just one lap before lunch as his McLaren-Honda succumbed to an oil system problem. The Spaniard finished the day with 29 laps to his name.

Marcus Ericsson was slowest of all for Sauber with 72 laps and a best time of 1:26.841.
