Sainz to stay at Toro Rosso in 2017 F1

Carlos Sainz will stay with Toro Rosso for a third successive season following parent team Red Bull decided to take up an option on his contract and also Daniil Kvyat expected to continue alongside with Spaniard.

Sainz is currently 14th in the drivers’ championship on 18 points, also four points behind Toro Rosso and more experienced teammate Daniil Kvyat. His best finish so far in 2016 came at his home race in Spain, where he finished sixth.

“We took up his option earlier this week, so he’s committed to Red Bull for the next 12 months,” Horner is quoted as saying by ESPN ahead of this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.

“As with all the drivers, they are contracted to Red Bull and we have the ability to place them where we want – he is currently at Toro Rosso, which is where we expect him to be next year.”

Asked if Sainz Jr. will have a different team-mate, Horner said: “I’d be surprised.

“Daniil is continuing his development and you can see that he is finding his feet now and there is not an obvious candidate knocking on the door at the moment who would warrant that seat.”
