Barcelona Day 1: Vettel on top, Williams trailed radical wings

Sebastian Vettel completed 103 laps over the course of the first day of this in-season test session at Barcelona. The German set the fastest time of the day in 1.23.220, running the Soft tyres.

Vettel worked on a programme that included trying various set-up combinations with different fuel loads and tyre compounds.

Championship leader Nico Rosberg made second fastest for Mercedes and completed 119 laps – the most of any team.

Williams ran modified front and double-layer rear wings to replicate the levels of down-force expected in 2017 F1 as part of a day of data gathering.

McLaren’s Jenson Button, who led at the lunch break with a time of 1:23.753 on the super-soft tyres. That best remained his fastest for the rest of the session on another perfect test day for McLaren-Honda.

Romain Grosjean set fourth fastest with a run on the ultra-soft tyres, which compound will get their official debut at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Pascal Wehrlein shows a best performance with Manor as he was fifth quickest ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. Toro Rosso test driver Pierre Gasly was seventh ahead of Force India’s Alfonso Celis. Williams’ rookie Alex Lynn managed ninth fastest ahead of Esteban Ocon, who was tested Renault’s new B-spec engine.
