Very slim chance P3 times for US GP grid – Lowe

Qualifying is due to take place at 1pm CT, but with rain expected to strengthen around this time, it is unclear whether or not the session will go ahead.

Mercedes F1 technical director Paddy Lowe said he expected FIA F1 director Charlie Whiting to try to run the session as planned.

“They will take each session as it comes, just as we have done,” Lowe is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

“We did ask Charlie and he has no clear idea of what the weather will definitely deliver so we will proceed as if qualifying will start at one o’clock as normal.

“It was very tricky but there is a very slim chance that P3 times could be taken as the grid. That’s why we saw a lot of cars out there trying to set a time.”

Race officials didn’t immediately announce plans for qualifying. If officials decided to use practice times, Hamilton would earn pole position for Sunday’s race as he seeks to win his second consecutive world title and third overall.
