Footage of F1 champion on the victors’ podium appeared to show him spraying champagne on the one man you’d want to avoid upsetting in Moscow: Vladimir Putin.

It may be why Hamilton was so public in his praise for the Russian President.

Just moments before receiving a champers soaking, Putin had stepped up to congratulate the winner Lewis Hamilton.

As Putin made his way off the podium, Hamilton raced to soak the crowd and unknowingly caught the Russian president, with champagne seen to splash on his suit as he made a swift exit.

Viewers have been quick to turn to Twitter, posting their concerns for Hamilton’s well-being after the incident.

On the podium Hamilton – sporting a traditional Russian hat – gushed: “I am very proud and happy. We have had a great time here, if you have never been out here it is a beautiful country and you should come.”

Mercedes secured their second successive F1 constructors’ title, with Hamilton taking a huge pace towards his third F1 drivers’ title.

The Brit took his ninth win of the season and 42nd of his career after a throttle trouble forced the early DNF of teammate Nico Rosberg, at Sochi.

Hamilton now has a lead of 66 points over Ferrari’s second-placed Vettel and, if results go his way, can secure his own second successive crown in Austin, Texas , in two weeks’ time.
