Carlos Sainz was hospitalized after a huge crash during the final practice session at the Russian Grand Prix.

Heading into Turn 13, which comes at the end of the DRS zone, Sainz hit the left hand barrier and then failed to turn before the corner.

From there he went straight on through the run-off area before his car was covered under the tec-pro safety barriers.

Medics and marshals were quickly on hand to extricate the Spaniard while Toro Rosso were unable to give Max Verstappen an update on his team-mate as Sainz’s STR lost power and its radio communications.

Minutes later the FIA reported that the “driver is conscious”.

Freshly Sainz’s manager Borja Ortiz-Echague said: “Carlos is conscious, breathing without difficulty and calm.”
