Huge crash for Sainz at Russian GP third practice

From Live Updates: “Bad-looking crash for Sainz – head-on at Turn 13, car is buried deeply into the barriers, medical crew in attendance.”

Third and final practice session for the Russian Grand Prix was delayed following Carlos Sainz suffered a huge crash 35 minutes into the run.

The Spaniard was pictured underneath barriers and marshalls and medical team were quickly on the sight.

Sainz lost control of his car when heading into the high-speed turn 13, with the Toro Rosso hitting the wall before carrying straight on into the TechPro barriers.

Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost said: ‘Carlos is conscious, he’s with the doctors now. They will see if he can continue the race weekend.’

Sainz’s Toro Rosso team reported that they had lost communication with him after the crash.

‘We lost the power of the car, so we don’t know,’ an engineer told team-mate Max Verstappen when he asked if Sainz was okay.

Freshly – Governing body FIA confirm the driver is conscious, we have seen him taken from the car and we are just waiting to see what happened.
