McLaren reprimanded for Alonso qualifying fault
McLaren has been reprimanded following fitting the wrong tyre to Fernando Alonso’s car during qualifying for the British Grand Prix.

Alonso has escaped exclusion from qualifying for fitting one of Button’s tyres to the Spaniard’s car.

Following the qualifying session, it appeared that McLaren had accidently fitted one of Button’s tires to Alonso’s car in Q1, prompting the stewards to launch an investigation.

“Car 14 [Alonso] used a tire allocated to car 22 [Button] in qualifying,” a brief statement from the stewards read, before calling for a team member to report to their office at 4pm local time.

“The team admitted the wrong tire had been fitted onto car 14 due to a communication error,” a subsequent statement read, confirming the reprimand.

Clarification how the incident happened, McLaren racing director Eric Boullier says it was simply a case of communication failure.

“What happened is we had a double pit stop with both cars,” Boullier said.

“There was a little bit of confusion caused by Jenson being stopped at the FIA scales and one of the tyres of Jenson was put on Fernando’s car.”
