Mika Häkkinen: Mercedes wasn’t as fast as I expected

Former double time world champion Mika Häkkinen strongly believes that Woking based squad McLaren is in top form in this season and also he added that Mercedes wasn’t as fast as he expected.

First two days of testing Mercedes struggled, opening day of test Rosberg forced out following few laps running due to an electrical issue detected in new F1 W04 and in second day Lewis Hamilton crashed into side barrier following rear brake failure. But the pair managed to make up for it on the final two days with over 140 laps each.

Last year Mercedes took its first Formula One victory in 57 years at the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix with Nico Rosberg.

“I have a strong feeling that McLaren is in top form this year,” Mika Häkkinen said during an interview with the BBC.

“As we saw at testing in Jerez, the Mercedes wasn’t as fast as I expected them to be, so I don’t see them competing too much this year.”

“Lewis has been with McLaren for so many years and I think, for him, it was time to change,” Häkkinen added.

“It’s just a job to be honest. There are no emotional feelings about it, you are there to win, you are racing with the team and you do your maximum for the team. Lewis has now moved to Mercedes and that is going to be interesting because his team-mate Nico Rosberg is also a very quick driver.”
