It was a misunderstanding – Button

Aug.27 – 2009 world champion says it was misunderstanding, the cause for his early qualifying way out at Spa, the McLaren driver Button explaining, “I obviously did my first lap and then I cooled the tyres”.

“It was a misunderstanding,” unhappy Button told BBC Sport. “I obviously did my first lap and then I cooled the tyres, not knowing that I didn’t have any more laps left. So obviously the track is getting drier and drier every lap because there are so many cars out there, and I think I was second or third quickest when I did my lap. Then I didn’t get the opportunity to do another lap so, wow, that’s massively disappointing and a big shock. In Q1 I was a second quicker than anyone, so a misunderstanding and a mistake on our part. Obviously I would have kept pushing, but I didn’t realise that was it, I thought I had another lap.”

“We have a completely dry setup, our car is very quick around here,” he added. “In every practice session we’ve had so far we’ve been in the top three, so it’s been very competitive. When we’ve been on the circuit we’ve been the quickest so it’s tough being back in 13th, but we’ve got to deal with it now.”
