Don’t try to make a f**king stupid story – Raikkonen

Kimi Raikkonen says giving his Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel a tow in Belgian GP qualifying was his own idea, not a team plan.

Kimi made dominant performance in practice session and he headed Vettel in all three sessions and following the first runs in the final qualifying segment.

But the Finn made a fault during his last attempt in the pole shootout and abandoned his lap, instead giving a tow to his team-mate and championship leader Vettel.

“Don’t try to make a f**king stupid story about this,” Raikkonen responded.

“I had a mistake, I was coming back, and obviously if I can help our team I will do it. There are not any other stories behind it.”

Raikkonen struggled with vibrations throughout the qualifying session, but is at a loss to say what the specific issue is.

“I don’t know what it is,” he added.

“At first it was worse, then a little bit less, then it disappeared and then it came back. Apart from that it was going pretty okay… on the last run there were some small things that were not ideal, and we went a bit sideways at one place.

“I was struggling a bit with the tyre temperatures, for whatever reason, on the last lap, so I got sideways and I couldn’t finish the lap.”

Vettel agreed it was not part of a team plan.

“He obviously wanted to finish that lap but when he did the mistake, and because of where we were positioned, I guess he saw a red car in the mirrors and thought ‘I would hand him a tow’, which was quite nice and obviously quite useful for me,” he said.

“It wasn’t planned. I saw some other teams playing around with tows, previously in qualifying, but usually it is one of those things that you can’t plan, so you tend to stay away from it.

“I think it was very spontaneous.”
