Alonso, Vandoorne receives grid penalties for Azerbaijan GP

McLaren-Honda F1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne will both are partake Azerbaijan Grand Prix with 15 places grid penalties following fitted new MGU-Hs in their cars.

McLaren’s engine provider Honda has suffered recurring problems with its MGU-H this season, Vandoorne suffering the latest failure in Canada practice. And his team-mate Alonso will also be given a new internal combustion engine, his fourth of the year.

Vandoorne will switch to its third combustion engine and will get a further 15 places in penalties as a result of a change to the MGU-H and the turbocharger, his seventh of the season.

“We already have some penalties to start the weekend, which is not ideal but this is the situation we are in,” Vandoorne told journalists in Baku.

“We will try and make our best focus maybe a bit more on race run and hopefully we can play a little bit during the race.

“We are probably competing to start from the back of the grid.”

According to reports Honda will trial various new components in practice before deciding what to race later in the weekend.
