Double-time Formula 1 world champion, Fernando Alonso admits that he talked with Mercedes just after Nico Rosberg’s surprise retirement from Formula 1, but says that there was never any possibility of moving to Silver Arrows and the talks never became serious matter.
Asked during the launch event of the McLaren MCL32 on Friday, Alonso said that he is fully committed to the third and final year of his deal with Woking based squad.
“I think we all had conversations,” Alonso said when the media asked about whether Mercedes had contacted him.
“We could find a new team dominating F1 now with these new cars. When Rosberg retired, there were a couple of days where I had some conversations and phone calls, but there was no point to discuss anything because I was happy at McLaren.
“It was nothing really strange or really deep into the conversation or the possibility, it was just a check round they did with everyone. The Spaniard said.
“For them it was to hear my situation and my situation was very clear — I have this year at McLaren-Honda, I am happy here and there was no point to talk any more or any possibility [of moving].”
