Nico Rosberg fastest following team-mate and morning pace setter Lewis Hamilton crashes out; the Brit taken to medical centre for precautionary check-up, the evening session was red-flagged while barriers repaired by track marshals.
Hamilton lost control of his Mercedes on the entry to Turn 11, skidding across the tarmac run-off area and into the tyres at relatively high speed. The impact with the tyre barrier was measured at 10.4G.
A medical check-up followed and though he reported to Sky F1 that he was fine, Mercedes confirmed that the Brit wouldn’t return.
Rosberg’s best of 1:20.435 was enough to give him top at the end of the session by half a second, leaving Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo to settle for second place.
Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finished third ahead of Max Verstappen in the second Red Bull, while Hamilton’s time was still good enough for P5 despite being 1.5 seconds slower than Rosberg’s.
Kimi Raikkonen managed sixth fastest, McLaren drivers, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button following in P7 and P8. McLaren were forced to fit a new power unit into Alonso’s car, while the Spaniard was in the garage for the majority of the session due to a damaged floor.
Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez rounded out the top 10 for Force India.
