Hamilton fastest in British GP FP1, Ferrari debuts Halo 2

Lewis Hamilton set fastest lap-time ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in the first practice for the British Grand Prix, as Ferrari debuts Halo 2 on track for the first time in Silverstone.

A best time of 1:31.654 was enough to give Hamilton P1 come the end of the running, edging out Rosberg by just 0.033 seconds. Mercedes duo clearly dominated through the incident-free first practice, running over two seconds ahead of nearest rivals.

Nico Hulkenberg set third fastest ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. Fresh from being confirmed as a Ferrari speedy until the end of 2017 F1 season, Kimi Raikkonen finished the session sixth, beating Red Bull youngster Max Verstappen in P7. Sergio Perez finished FP1 in eighth, ahead of the Spanish pair of Carlos Sainz Jr. and Fernando Alonso

Sebastian Vettel, who trialled Ferrari’s ‘halo 2’ device on his install lap, experienced a late scare as he reported a gearbox issue on his return to the pits.
