Lewis Hamilton led the way for Mercedes in the opening practice session for the European Grand Prix at the brand new Baku city circuit on Friday.

Championship leader Nico Rosberg set second fastest lap-time – McLaren’s Fernando Alonso was an impressive fourth fastest, ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, 2.2 seconds off Hamilton’s time.

A number of drivers ran off track on a bumpy, windy and dusty Baku street circuit, with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo snapping off the right rear wheel in a collision with a barrier which brought out the red flag.

Force India’s Sergio Perez ended the session sixth ahead of Jenson Button in the second McLaren, who was followed by Felipe Massa, Carlos Sainz and the second Force India ace Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top 10.

A disappointed result for Red Bull as both Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen hit trouble; a leak limiting the latter’s running throughout the session.
