Sainz hit with five-place grid penalty for Canadian GP

Carlos Sainz has been handed a five-place grid penalty at the Canadian Grand Prix following his STR11 had to replace gearbox following qualifying Q2 accident.

The Spanish ace was heavily crashed into the ‘wall of champions’ during first session of Q2; penalty will see him demoted from 15th on the grid to 20th, just ahead of Marcus Ericsson and Kevin Magnussen

Jolyon Palmer, Manor duo Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto and Felipe Nasr also benefited a place lift.

Rear wheels hit generally resulting gearbox damage and Toro Rosso informed the FIA of its plans to install a new gearbox after the session.
