An impressive qualifying performance from Sebastian Vettel, just by one tenth of the Mercedes drivers, sees the German will line up in third on the grid ahead of Monaco GP pole sitter Daniel Ricciardo.

“Going into qualifying, I thought it [pole position] was possible. As a driver you always feel there is a little bit more.” Vettel told Sky F1

“On my last lap I was very happy with the lap in general; I was maybe a little bit greedy out of Turn 10, maybe not greedy enough into Turn Six. There wasn’t an awful lot to grab. Otherwise, I’m very happy.

“I wanted to get below the 1m13s mark, because then I know it will be very close with the Mercedes. I did that, but just by one [tenth], so a little bit was missing.

The four-time world champion praised Ferrari for the power-unit upgrade it introduced this weekend.

“Overall, I think we have a great car, we did a step and I am happy with the weekend has turned out. In general I am very comfortable and enjoyed qualifying. I brushed the Wall of Champions, so I have done that and don’t have to do that tomorrow.”
