Red Bull speedy Daniil Kvyat headed champions’ Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in a rainy second practice at the Japanese Grand Prix.
The young Russian took quickest ahead of Rosberg by just 0.023 seconds, with the championship leader a further 0.553secs adrift.
Daniel Ricciardo was fourth followed by the Ferrari pair of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.
Rain also hit the morning session when Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz Jr. had the fastest time.
Sainz was seventh in the afternoon session followed by teammate Max Verstappen. Sauber’s Felipe Nasr and Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado completed the top 10.
First half-hour Jenson Button waited in the garage, and following complaining of “massive understeer” on occasion, finished 12th, 3.584s adrift.
The home Heros – Honda discovered an unclear problem following first practice and as a safeguard opted to revert to one of its stash systems, leaving Alonso looking on from hospitality for the opening 40 minutes. The Spaniard eventually wound up 17th, nearly seven seconds down, having only run on wets.
