Mika Hakkinen says he is increasingly impressed with F1’s teenage sensation Max Verstappen.

The young Dutchman was back in the headlines after the Singapore grand prix, not only after fighting through the field from dead last but also for defying Toro Rosso’s team orders with a loud and clear “No!”

“No driver likes to let anyone past, even if it is not about a world championship or even a win, but only a few points,” former double world champion Mika Hakkinen said.

“Verstappen only turns 18 next week,” he told the Finnish newspaper Ilta Sanomat, “but the guy is turning into a really tough professional.

“Young people today are developing at an incredible rate,” Hakkinen added, “and I do not just mean the drivers.” (GMM)

there are people who never grow up. The discussion about age is something of older people…… they fear getting older…. some kids like Verstappen are very mature with 17, others need to be in their 20’s to be old enough to be mature enough to handle it.

In the dawn of F1 we had Fangio start his career at 39…
now it’s just the other way around.

I wonder how long before they start retire drivers at age 30?

It’s just the tendency I think, but we can all learn that it can go both ways.

I am not so keen on going down the age in F1 much more as it’s obvious that young pilots can do great stuff even at this early age, I think it’s a matter of a personal case and that at a certain age there’s a limit that you’re just not ready. You’re still much too young and practically still a kid. I am sure that’s a subject to individual case also, but you just can’t put a 14-15 yo in an F1, at least if the F1 cars don’t degrade much more to the point they literally are comparable with Go-Karts.

Other than that I expect that we will see maybe not that much many that young, but still some comparably younger drivers coming to F1 in the years to come.
