Trulli: Alonso wants team devoted to him

Jarno Trulli has first-hand experience of being a team-mate of Fernando Alonso, and says the Spaniard has to be the star attraction.

Fernando Alonso can only thrive at McLaren if the team is centred around him, according to former team-mate Jarno Trulli.

Speaking to Perform, Trulli said: “I always had a good relationship with Fernando Alonso. The problem is that he always wants the team devoted to him only.

“Everything must be done only for him. This factor has affected Ferrari in the past bringing the team to the level we saw last year. For sure he is a centraliser driver.

“As long as things go well Fernando shows all his qualities. With no doubt Fernando is a great driver. On the other hand, when things go in the wrong way, it becomes more difficult for him to be team-oriented.

“But that is his nature; every driver has his own, so I believe we should not consider it as a failing for Fernando.”

Trulli does not necessarily believe Alonso made a bad decision to leave Ferrari, but warned that he will have to remain patient if he wants to compete with the elite in F1 again.

“Vettel today is the right man in the right team, this does not mean that Alonso is not right for McLaren. The main problem is that McLaren has a lot of technical problems.

“The situation is very difficult for Fernando Alonso but also for Jenson Button. Fernando will have to be very patient in order to make or try to make McLaren competitive in 2016.” (sportal, Video from ESPN)
