The 2015 Formula 1 season began as it ended last season with a win for World Champion Lewis Hamilton. The Silver Arrow driver also posted the first fastest race lap of the year.
Hamilton remained the only driver to dip below the 1:30 mark in the Melbourne season opener with a 1:30.945. He set best time on Lap 50 in the closing stages of the race, just eight laps from the finish line, winning against team-mate Nico Rosberg by the narrowest of margins. The German achieved his fastest time of 1:31.092 minutes on Lap 47.
“But when Nico turned up the heat I was able to react, which was good.” (Lewis Hamilton
The two Mercedes drivers chased one another for the whole of the race. Lewis: “Nico was very quick throughout the race and it was really trying to manage the fuel and all that, and also the tyres, not really knowing where the limit of the tyres is in terms of how far they can go. But once you’ve got a two-second gap you try to manage that, there’s no need to eke out more. But when Nico turned up the heat I was able to react, which was good.”
Hamilton leads the rankings in the DHL Fastest Lap Award thanks to his fastest lap in the season-opening race at Albert Park. This was Hamilton’s 21st fastest race lap of his Formula 1 career. Last year, he won the DHL Fastest Lap Award for the first time since its inception in 2007 with a total of seven fastest laps.
The second race weekend of the season takes place from 27th to 29th March with the 2015 FORMULA 1 PETRONAS MALAYSIA GRAND PRIX at the Sepang International Circuit. (Powered by DHL)
