The German clocked a best lap of two minutes and 5.698 seconds to outpace his title rival and team-mate in unpredictable conditions at the long 7.004-km Spa Francorchamps circuit.

The pole was Rosberg’s seventh of the season, with dominant Mercedes taking 11 of the 12 so far, fourth in a row and 11th of his Formula 1 career.

“It is awesome at this track, it is one of the most special tracks of the year. It was not quite as difficult out here as some other occasions because the condition was pretty much always intermediates. Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg said, who secured pole

“I am really happy, the car was handling well. Together with my engineers we fine tuned it perfectly and got there in the end. It is only qualifying, a long race tomorrow but I am very happy.

“Eau Rouge I was feeling good through it, really going for it and maybe that it where I made my time.”
