Rosberg grab pole in thrilling Silverstone qualifying

Nico Rosberg took pole position in thrilling Silverstone qualifying for 2014 British Grand Prix; and nearest title rival Lewis Hamilton push down to sixth after dramatic self-decision.

Rosberg’s best lap-time was 1.6s faster than second position speedy Sebastian Vettel. Local star Jenson Button was third fastest ahead of the Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg.

Button said after exciting segment “like you could not believe. It’s only third but for us after the last 18 months we had no chance of getting this result. It’s nice to qualify so well in front of the home crowd.”

McLaren’s second hero, Kevin Magnussen also improved timing in his second runs, and managed fifth fastest ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

Sergio Perez set seventh fastest ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, Toro Rosso drivers Daniil Kvyat and Jean-Eric Vergne, completed the top ten in the grid.

Ferrari and Williams suffered Q1 tragedy; they badly misjudged the varying weather conditions, and knocked out from Q2, Valtteri Bottas was 17th, ahead of team-mate Felipe Massa and the Ferrari duo Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen. (Images © Mercedes GP)
