(Mercedes) With efficiency a key factor in this new era of Formula One, the team has spent more than three years working closely with PETRONAS to co-engineer a brand new range of customised fuels and lubricants that will help provide a competitive edge on track in 2014 and beyond.
Effectively, fuel efficiency boils down to getting the maximum number of molecules into every kilogram of the limited amount of fuel on board, but this is no mean feat; with challenges presented by a range of requirements from the all-new Power Unit
Within the direct injection V6 Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), for example, it is critical that the fuel injectors operate to their full potential whenever in use. In terms of the molecules used in the fuel, some potential components which would be ideally suited to efficiency gains are more likely to promote deposits in the injectors, which points in the wrong direction in terms of fuel efficiency.
With these considerations in mind, the octane number of the all-new PETRONAS Primax fuel used in the F1 W05 has been balanced molecule-by-molecule to ensure the maximum possible fuel density is achieved, whilst also giving careful attention to injector clearance.
The immense energy content of this new breed of fuel will be significant to performance, and it will be how that energy is managed over the course of a race that will ultimately determine the outcome on many occasions. What we have here is the lifeblood of a new era in Formula One, and a crucial step in the development of fuel technology for the wider automotive industry.
