FIA plans to tweak nose regulations for 2015 F1

tumblr_inline_n04vca5N3x1rt6l7yThe disagreement of the F1 fans against the ugly noses did not go unheard. For this season, the child did indeed fall into the well, but for 2015, there is hope. The FIA will revise the nose usually to prevent the ugliest excesses.

That was not the point of it. The Formula 1 cars had to put up with comparisons from the animal kingdom, when the new formula 1 generation marched in Jerez for the first time. From anteaters, proboscis monkeys, elephants, catfish, dolphins and rays were talk. A FIA man admitted: “When we saw the first copies of the nose in the crash tests, we were shocked.” The engineers had warned the scene in their comments, but who expects the same for the worst?

Lap time more important than styling – Adrian Newey is an upset. It hurts him to have to build an ugly car. But this time he washes his hands of it. “Giving priority to the lap time, Styling is as only secondary. I find it unfortunate that the cars that come out of it do not look attractive. ”

New F1 noses in the service of security – The FIA had with the setting lower the nose in the first place, not even the reduction of the output in mind. “We cannot break a rule keeper’s head about whether the nose looks aesthetically or not. But what concerns us, if they fulfil the purpose that we intended with the rules. We wanted to reduce the risk of ascending in a rear-end collision “defends FIA race director Charlie Whiting the regulations.

“All noses have passed the crash test; you meet the letter of the law. Unless a structure is not dangerous, we have to live with the fact that the lugs look like they look. We have acted in good faith, but we are not designers. The want as much air as possible by bringing under the car and reduce everything that stands in the way, “said Whiting.

New Nose Regulations from 2015 – One sticking point is that the delay in the crash test on the first 15 inches must not exceed 10. But there is no minimum size for the controlled folding on impact. Some teams have the front part of the nose designed as soft, as if it were made of cardboard. It should have come to a delay values undergo. And which is almost as high as in the past because of the rise of the nose.

That’s what should really be prevented. But the FIA gives hope. She wants to make improvements for 2015, the regulations in this area. Are ideas about it already , as Whiting told Auto Motor und Sport: ” For example, that we demand symmetry , we require not only maximum , but minimum delay for the first 150 mm of crush zone , and that we are relevant to the level surface not only larger , but require more of these areas further back . Then the abrupt transitions would be avoided by a cross-section to another. ”
