The Williams chief operations engineer Mark Gillan believes that Maldonado will finish with big points. The Venezuelan lifted from his qualifying initial grid place, following the Vettel’s penalty.
Maldonado has finished on top podium in the Spanish Grand Prix, this season he finished only three times with points, and now standing 15th on the drivers’ championship. Also they still standing behind the Force India, eighth place constructors championship and 34-point gap
“We all know what is at stake, Pastor knows, we all know, it’s important that we get good points.” Gillan told Autosport.
“He has pushed really hard this weekend and I expect him to do so in the race. [Catching Force India] is a big task but it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility.
“There are still three races left, the car is quick and we need to be finishing with big points.”
“If we can get away well, which we have been doing, Pastor’s running all the way through the weekend has been particularly strong. There’s no reason why we can’t have a very good finish.
“The Friday race pace was very good through the long runs. P4 was extracting pretty much everything from the car, so it was not far from the ultimate laptime,” he added.
Pastor Maldonado: It was a difficult session, especially in Q2 as we were on the limit in P10, but I saw the potential in the car. We then found a great balance in Q3 and I’m happy that we are back to looking strong again.”
“I think we showed throughout all the weekend that we are competitive and I did my best in qualifying. I’m really happy for the team, for myself and looking forward to the race tomorrow. Points are very important for us so I will be pushing to the maximum.” Venezuelan added.
