Button says Hamilton was able to confirm McLaren pace at Hungary

Jenson Button says that following the race he was confused by his pit stop strategy at the Hungarian Grand Prix, McLaren adapted three stops strategy for Button, but every times he stuck in traffic following pit-stop exit.

Jenson Button took third place in opening lap of the race starting from the fourth. But early pit-stop and traffic cost his top places and he finished in sixth place.

“I don’t know really what was going on there,” Button said.

“The weird thing was that coming out of the first stop I could still see the leaders coming out of turn two when they were coming out of turn three so we were very close.

“Then we decided to go for a three-stop, but stopping very early and both times I came out in traffic I kept thinking ‘why am I in traffic again’ because normally you pit to get into clear air. Then I just sat in traffic and the traffic I was in was slower than the people I was racing against so I could never beat them. Not the best day so I’m disappointed.” Button instantly reacted after race.

Button congratulate race winner Lewis Hamilton, he says that the positive things, McLaren are obviously quick, as I was able to show at Hockenheim and Lewis was able to confirm here.

“First of all, I want to say a big ‘Well done!’ to Lewis and the entire Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team. Fantastic job, guys! For me, though, I guess today was quite a bit more frustrating than it was for Lewis. Having said that, I was really pleased to be able to get ahead of Seb [Vettel] on the opening lap, passing him on the outside of Turn Two, and to be able to hold a very solid third place at that point. “ McLaren release the drivers quotes.

“I was on the leaders’ pace too. In fact, even after the first stop, I could still see the leaders – so we were obviously still pretty close. Then we decided to go for a three-stop strategy – but after my second and third stops I encountered traffic, unfortunately, which made things really difficult for me because the traffic I was stuck in was lapping quite a bit slower than I could have been lapping if I’d had a clear track.”

“But there are lots of positives to take away from this weekend: our car is obviously quick, as I was able to show at Hockenheim and Lewis was able to confirm here, and in the second half of the season I know that everyone at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes will work as hard as possible to maintain and continue that upward performance development curve. Now, as we go into the mid-season break, I’m going to go away and relax. I’m really looking forward to it, in fact.” He added in official quotes.

Button was not helped by a slow first pit stop, which sporting director Sam Michael said the team was investigating but was believed to be due to a problem with the equipment.
