Still doubt over 2012 Silverstone young driver test

Still puzzlement over this season planned Silverstone young driver test, listed events will starts second week of July following the British Grand Prix.

Last some season this young driver test has taken place in Yas Marina after their Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

But, switching the test to Silverstone had been planned to help with the logistics of moving the Formula 1 roadshow from the UAE to the new United States Grand Prix in Texas.

The three-day Silverstone test was penciled in for the week following the British GP, starting on Tuesday 10th July and concluding on Thursday 12th July. But, the circuit is engaged on these dates as Formula Student is scheduled to run at the Northamptonshire track from 11th-15th July.

Current criticism, with Lotus Team Principal Eric Boullier stating that the test would break off junior drivers’ seasons, whilst McLaren, Red Bull and Toro Rosso had all publicly stated their plans to run in Abu Dhabi.

Another contributing factor could be engine cost. With the Abu Dhabi test late in the season, teams can run old race engines which have completed their race mileage and would not be used again, but a mid-season Silverstone test would necessitate extra engines.
