Bernie Ecclestone: ‘Europe is finished for F1’

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone says Western Europe is “finished” as a top F1 destination and is likely to host just five races each year in the future.

There are presently eight races in Western Europe but F1 supremo Ecclestone says Europe is a “thing of the past” and wants instead to take the sport to new destinations such as Mexico, Russia and South Africa.

“I think in the next few years Europe will be left with only five races,” Ecclestone told Spanish sports daily Marca. “I think Europe is finished. It will be a good place for tourism but little else. Europe is a thing of the past.”

“Russia for sure, we have a contract there,” Ecclestone said. “Maybe South Africa, Mexico”.

Asked if Europe was still the spiritual home of the sport, Ecclestone said: “It used to be.”

Western Europe currently hosts five classics – the British, Belgian, Italian, German and Monaco Grands Prix. The other European races in 2012 are in Budapest, Barcelona and Valencia.
