I think it’s a great achievement – Alonso

Sept.11 – Dual time world champion Fernando Alonso thinks that podium finish was a “fantastic” result for Ferrari for Italian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard Fernando Alonso had taken the race lead at the start, but was only able to hang on for just over a lap following the premature restart before Vettel got through. The Red Bull ended up partially on the grass at Curva Grande at one point as Alonso tried to maintain his place.

“We’ve been doing some good starts in the last couple of grands prix but always starting fifth or sixth it’s not enough room to overtake,” he added.

“But here in Monza we knew that if the car was in the same feeling of good starts here in Monza you have enough space and enough run to the first corner to overtake people. So we maximised the potential in our start and we led the race for a couple of laps but we were not competitive enough to fight for victory so we tried to manage the podium possibility.

“It was very close at the end with Lewis but it was a fantastic race, fantastic feeling on the podium – I think here in Monza it is very, passionate what the fans give you.”

While Vettel’s eighth win of the campaign moves him to the brink of the championship, Mark Webber’s early retirement in the other Red Bull meant Alonso moved up to second place in the standings.

Indeed he feels the fact he managed to at least beat one McLaren made it a commendable home race for Ferrari.

“Well done to the whole team,” he said.

“It was a stressful weekend with pressure here in Italy for them and we managed the race in the best situation possible with no mistakes. I think me on the podium with Mark retiring from the race and Lewis behind us, so one Red Bull, one McLaren behind us I think it’s a great achievement.”
