June.26 – The local boy Fernando Alonso was pleased with the second on podium he achieved through this afternoon’s European GP, describing the event as a ‘very good weekend’ for his Ferrari team. Alonso enjoyed a race-long fight with Mark Webber and finally split the Red Bull drivers en route to his first ever podium finish at the Spanish venue.
“I think it was an interesting race, for the fans, for the television viewers to see the fight with Webber all through the race,” said Alonso. “At the beginning of the race I was behind him, trying to be not too far (behind) and try to have the benefit in the pit-stop, having the opportunity to overtake him. The opportunity came later on, in the middle of the race, but on the track and not in the pits. I overtook him under braking for Turn 12, but in the pits they did a good job again and overtook us. In the last pit-stop I think the team did a very good strategy, keeping the car out with the Soft tyres for a couple of laps longer than the Red Bull.
“The car performed really well and we finally overtook him at the stop, so lots of changing positions between Mark and me. In the end I think second place is the maximum we can achieve these days, so being here between the Red Bull cars is a great achievement from the team. Monaco was a very good performance all weekend, we finished second. Canada was a very good performance, we didn’t score any points there. Here again, a very good weekend in terms of performance with Felipe and me. Both cars in the top five is a great team result so we’re definitely moving in the right direction, we need to keep working and hopefully be closer to these guys in the next one.”
